Kempo Ryu Karate Kickboxing is a combination of practical techniques of Kempo Karate, and the modern training methods of Kickboxing. It has been devised by Phil Cawood 6th Dan.
The system is a synthesis of both western and oriental combat styles. The Striking techniques are mainly derived from western boxing along with the stances and guard positions. The kicking techniques are derived from Karate, Kung-Fu and Muay-Thai, along with the elbow and kneeing techniques of Muay-Thai.
The self defence techniques are adapted from Ed Parker's American Kenpo Karate, which can trace its origins back to one of the first Chinese martial arts some 1,500 years ago. Ken or Kem means 'fist', Po means 'law' and Ryu means 'school' or 'way ', and is pronounced "Roo". The training methods and drills practiced in Kempo Ryu are in many way similar to western boxing, including the use of focus mitts, punchbags and kick-shields. It is stripped of all superfluous technique, containing only those which work in a sparring and self-defence situation. A high level of fitness is promoted by Kempo Ryu. The training methods are amongst the most up to date producing a high level of self-defence in a short time.
